What you'll be doing

Start in the non-league.

Your first club has more problems than money, and it sits at the bottom of the pyramid. Win promotions one division at a time, win cups along the way, and turn a tiny club into a household name. The league does not wait for you to be ready.

Watch it happen, minute by minute.

Follow the big games as they unfold, with commentary, goals, substitutions and cards as they land, or speed it up and skip straight to the result. Pick the formation, pick the eleven, and find out whether it works.

Put the squad together.

Bid for stars, pick up free transfers and assemble a side that wins the league. The transfer market moves on without you and rivals chase the same targets, so act first. Set the starting eleven by list or by formation, and keep an eye on how the squad fits together.

Grow your own.

Bring teenagers into the academy and develop them into first-team players instead of buying them. Watch the attributes tick up month by month across the senior squad, the youth side and the academy, then see a player you raised get called up for his country.

Hire the gaffer. Sack him if you must.

You appoint the manager, and you judge him on tactics, man-management and discipline. Extend his contract when it is going well, and dismiss him when it is not. He knows when you have been looking at replacements.

Build the backroom.

Choose the assistant manager, the coaches and the scouts. A good physio keeps the squad fit and a good scout finds the gems before anyone else does. Your number of seats grows as you climb, and specialist coaches become available further up the pyramid.

Know every player.

Every player has a value, a wage, a contract and a history. Negotiate new terms, list him for transfer or loan, and follow his season and career appearances, goals and ratings, with a progression curve that shows exactly how far he has come.
